Biographical/Historical Note
Sister Gertrude was born Elizabeth Roney on November 19, 1855 in Bardstown, KY. She entered the Sacred Heart of Mary Academy Novitiate in Washington, DC. She received the habit on January 11, 1874 and was given the religious name, Sister Gertrude. She pronounced first vows on January 17, 1875 and final vows on January 18, 1980. In 1886 she was received into the Nashville, TN, Congregation. In 1891 Sister traveled to New York City for a meeting and on return trip stopped in Fall River, MA. Afterwards the sisters were invited to come to Fall River. They arrived on September 4, 1891 and set up a temporary convent and opened Saint Dominic's School. On August 12, 1892 the first canonical election took place in Fall River and Sister Gertrude was elected Sub-Prioress and then re-elected: 1895;1904; and 1910. Sister was elected Prioress, 1913-1916. She died December 6, 1928.
