According to Wikipedia, "Some members of strict monastic orders, and some members of the Catholic lay organization Opus Dei, practice mild self-flagellation using an instrument called a 'discipline', a cattail whip usually made of knotted cords, which is flung over the shoulders repeatedly during private prayer.[19]. Acquisition Information

The item was acquired from a display case at Mount St. Mary College on 2012 June 19 prior to the re-purposing of the former Motherhouse building, which the College purchased in 2011.

Physical Description

The cord measures approximately 19" long. It has 8 strands of brown hemp or twine wrapped together at the top. Each strand is knotted at the end.
