This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Joan Roberta was born Catherine Woods on October 10, 1906 in NYC. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 7, 1931 and received the habit on July 12, 1932 when she was given the religious name, Sister Joan Roberta. She pronounced first vows on July 13, 1933 and final vows on August 21, 1939 . During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Cassa San Jose, Newburgh, NY, 1931-1940; St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1940-1948; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, Principal, 1948-1954; and Pope Pius High School, Passaic, NJ, 1954-1960; Bishop Dunn Memorial, Principal, 1960-1962. Sister was an associate Professor of English, Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1962-1976. She retired to Mt. St. Mary Convent, Newburgh, NY, 1976. Sister Joan Roberta earned her AB from the college of Mt. St. Vincent, NY, and her MA from Catholic University. She died August 31, 1996.
