Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Rose was born Carolyn Wittekind on March 10, 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She entered the Ossining Congregation on December 7, 1951 and received the habit on June 24, 1952 when she received the religious name, Sister Rose. She pronounced first vows on June 24, 1953 and final vows on June 25, 1956. During her years in the congregation she served in the following Dominican Sisters Home Health Care Agencies: Detroit, MI, as case worker, 1953-1954; Bronx, NY, 1954-1956, 1965-1968; Denver CO, 1974-1979; and Columbus, OH, 1979-1981. Sister also ministered as a physical therapist in: Metropolitan Hospital, NYC, 1963-1964; FDR VA Hospital, Montrose, NY, 1070-1974- 1981-1992; and Brandywine Nursing Home, Briarcliff, NY, 1992-1995. Sister Rose earned her RN from Misericordia Hospital, and her BS and MA in Physical Therapy from NY University. She died September 9, 2012.
