This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Joan Ruth was born Joan Ruth Whittle on January 3, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1956 and received the habit on June 12, 1957 when she was given the religious name, Sister Regina Joseph. (She began using the name, Sister Joan Ruth after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1958 and final vows on August 21, 1961. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Lawrence, Laurel Springs, NJ, 1958-1959; St. Joseph, Bayonne, NJ, 1959-1964; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1964-1968; St. Ursula, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1968-1973; and Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, 1973-1986. She moved on to the high school level and taught at: Blessed Sacrament/St. Gabriel, New Rochelle, NY, 1986-1996; teacher and campus minister at Iona Preparatory School, in New Rochelle, NY, 1996-2002; assistant principal for religious studies as well as campus minister at Our Lady of Good Counsel Newark, NJ, 2002-2006; and was Dean of Freshmen at Rice High School, in NYC, 2006-. Sister Joan Ruth also ministered as: a leader for the Girl Scouts of Westchester-Putnam Counties, 1974-1984; community director for the Girl Scouts of Mt. Vernon/Pelham ,1982-1986; and coordinator of SEARCH retreats for young adults in CYO, 1988-1999. Sister Joan Ruth earner her BA from Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, and her MA in Special Education from Fordham University. She died September 25, 2016.
