Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Marianne was born Marianne Watts on October 4, 1930 in Oswego, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 4, 1962 and received the habit on June 19, 1963 when she was given the religious name, Sister Maria James. (She began using the name, Sister Marianne after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 22, 1964 and final vows on October 4, 1969. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1962-1963, 1964-1966; school, Cardinal Gibbons, Raleigh, NC, 1966-1969, secondary school, business and English; English at Mt. St. Mary Academy, Newburgh, NY, 1969-1972; Gloucester Catholic, Gloucester, NJ, 1972-1976; and Immaculate, Danbury, CT, 1976-1983. Sister Marianne also ministered as: regional coordinator of DARE, the Office of Substance Abuse in the Archdiocese of NY,1983-1987; training program administrator for the National Council on Alcoholism, White Plains, NY, 1987-1993; and founder and administrator of Maxtrain at The Maxwell Institute, Tuckahoe, NY. She was also secretary to the Dominican Sisters of Hope Ministry Trust. Sister produced publications for St. John Chrysostom School, Bronx, NY, 1994-. Sister Marianne earned her: BA in English from the College of New Rochelle; her MA in English Literature from Catholic University; and her MLIT in The Novel from Middlebury College. Sister moved to Asbury Towers, Asbury Park, NJ.
