Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Helen Michael was born Mary Walsh on November 21, 1905 in NYC. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 7, 1926 and received the habit on May 6, 1927 when she was given the religious name, Sister Helen Michael. She pronounced first vows on June 16 1928 and final vows on August 12, 1934. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Boniface, NYC, 1929-1933; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1933-1934; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1934-1946; Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1946-1954; Assumption, Fairfield, Ct, principal, 1954-1960, and teacher, 1970-1984; Regina Coeli, Hyde Park, NY, 1960-1964; and Sts. Peter and Paul, Trenton, NJ, 1964-1970. Sister moved to Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY where she volunteered in the Development Office. She died March 2, 1999.
