Biographical / Historical

Sister Catherine Walsh was born Catherine Walsh on April 23, 1945 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on August 30, 1963 and received the habit on June 22, 1964 when she was given the religious name, Sister James Catherine . (She began using the name, Sister Catherine after Vatican II.) She pronounced first vows on June 23, 1965 and final vows on August 9, 1970. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Allenhurst, NJ, 1967-1968; St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1968-1970, Bishop Dunn Memorial, Newburgh, NY, 1970-1974, and was principal 1974-1983. Sister was associate professor of communication at Mt.St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1983-1991, and volunteer public relations coordinator for the Newburgh Congregation 1987-1991. She was a councilor and secretary general for the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, 1991-1995. Sister served as first Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, 1995-1999. In 2000, following a sabbatical, she resumed her ministry at Mt. St. Mary College as professor of communications. Sister was elected to the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, 2014-. Sister Catherine earned her: BA in Elementary Education from Mt.St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY; her MA in Education and in Corporate Communication from Fairfield University; and her Ed.D in Administration and Supervision from Fordham University.
