From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Stephen was born Mary Underwood on September 28, 1913 in Gloucester, NJ . She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1939 and received the habit on June 19, 1940 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Stephen . She pronounced first vows on June 27, 1941 and final vows on August 20, 1947. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1939-1940, 1965-; Casa San Jose, Newburgh, NY, 1941-1942; Pope Pius XII HS, Passaic, NJ, 1942-1965; Principal at Mount St. Mary Academy, 1966-1969; and librarian, St. Lawrence School, Lindenwold, NJ, 1983-1990. Sister also served the congregation in the following areas: Chairman of Retirement, 1971-1975; Congregational Director of Health and Retirement, 1975-; Personnel Office member, 1979; First Councilor for the Newburgh Congregation, 1979-; Personnel Office Staff for Health and Retirement Concerns, 1983-; and Assistant Archivist, 1990-. Sister Mary Stephen earned her BS in Education from Glassboro State Teachers College, and her MA in Physics from Catholic University. She died April 7, 2007.
