Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Vera was born Vera Troski on November 4, 1923 in Columbus, OH. She entered the Ossining Congregation March 7, 1947 and received the habit on September 9, 1947 when she received the religious name, Sister Joseph Maria. (She began using the name, Sister Vera after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on September 10, 1948 and final vows on September 10, 1951. During her years in the congregation she served in the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor Family Health Agencies: Springfield, OH, 1948-1949, 1952-1955; Cincinnati, OH, 1955-1960; Dayton, OH, 1960-1967; and Minneapolis, MN, 1967-1976. Sister also ministered Cincinnati, OH, in: Nurse, Tender Mercies, 1987; Passport, as Case Manager, 1987-1989; and Ombudsman, Pro Seniors, 1989-1995. Sister Vera earned her RN at St. Catherine's Hospital, Brooklyn, NY. She died August 18, 1995.
