Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Jean Marie was born Jean Marie Timko on September 12, 1936 in Trenton, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1956 and received the habit on June 13, 1957 when she was given the religious name, Sister Jean Baptiste. (She began using the name, Sister Jean Marie after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1958 and final vows on August 21, 1961. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1958-1967; Convento San Jose, Villa Caparra, PR, 1967-1970; St. Cecilia, Iselin, NJ, 1971-1972; Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1972; Sacred Heart, Newburgh, NY, 1972-1974; and Holy Rosary, Hawthorne, NY, 1975-1976. Sister also ministered in the Infirmary, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, and in Religious Education, Holy Family Parish, Flushing, NY, 1977-1978. Sister Jean Marie was involved with Healing Ministry: Staten Island, NY, 1984-1985, Carteret, NJ, 1986-1992; and Thermopolis, WY, 1966-. Sister Jean Marie earned her BS in Elementary Education from Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, and her MS in Theology from St. John's University, Jamaica, NY. She died December 21, 2009.
