Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Doris was born Doris Thibault on June 1, 1927 in NYC. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1944 and received the habit on June 21, 1945 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Philip. (She began using the name, Sister Doris after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 24, 1946 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Patrick School, Woodbury, NJ, 1946-1949; St. Joan of Arc, Camden, NJ, 1949-1957; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1957-1966; St. Joseph, Bayonne, NJ, 1966-1967; Gloucester Catholic HS, Gloucester, NJ, French, 1967-1970; and French at Immaculate HS, in Danbury, CT,1970-1994. Following a sabbatical year, Sister Doris, taught at St. Elizabeth Elementary School, NYC, 1995-2005. In 2005, she moved to Danbury CT where she was an aide at Sacred Heart of Jesus Regional School. For many years she also brought students to France and many other European countries to introduce them to the history and culture of the people. Sister Doris earned her BA in Education from Villanova University and her MA in French from Riviere College. She also received three government grants in the study of French: Iona College in New Rochelle, NY; Notre Dame in Indiana; and l’Universite Catholique, Angers, France.
