Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Dorothy was born Dorothy Talbot on April 19, 1917 in Mt. Vernon, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on February 2, 1940 and received the habit on August 5, 1940 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Damian. (She began using the name, Sister Dorothy after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 6, 1941 and final vows on August 20, 1947. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1941-1942; St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1942-1943; St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1943-1946; St. Mary, Passaic, NJ, 1946-1950; Little Flower, Pensacola, FL, 1950-1955; Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, 1955-1957; Sacred Heart, Raleigh, NC, 1957-1961; Our Lady of Lourdes HS, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1961-1964; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1964-1968; Gloucester Catholic HS, Gloucester, NJ, 1968-1970; and Immaculate HS, Danbury, CT, 1970-1985, art program and Library Study, 1985-1987. Sister also ministered at St. Dominic School, Bricktown, NJ, 1987-1995. She moved to the Newburgh Center of Hope in 1995. Sister Dorothy earned her BS in Education from Villanova University, and her MA in Art from Catholic University, Washington, DC. She died April 27, 2002.
