From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Madeleine was born Barbara Tacy on November 3, 1939 in Malone, NY. She entered the Fall River Congregation on September 1, 1957 and received the habit on August 22, 1958 when she received the religious name, Sister Madeleine. She pronounced first vows on August 22, 1960 and final vows on August 22, 1963. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1959-1960; St. Bernadette, New Haven, CT, 1960-1970; and St. Francis Xavier, Acushnet, MA, 1970-1973. She also ministered as: a core member and treasurer at Still Point House of Prayer in Round Lake, NY, 1973-1976; campus minister at Southeastern Massachusetts University, North Dartmouth, MA, 1976-; and staff counselor/supervisor at the Interfaith Counseling Center in New Bedford, MA 1988-1995. Sister was campus minister at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in North Dartmouth, MA, 1995-1998, and, after completing a sabbatical program, 1998-1999, continued in that role, 1999-. Sister Madeleine earned her: BA and MA in History from Southern Connecticut State College in New Haven, CT; her MA in Counseling from St. Joseph College in West Hartford, CT; and her M Div. and D Min from Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, MA.
