Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Louise was born Louise Synan on June 14, 1931 in Fall River, MA. She entered the Fall River Congregation on September 2, 1951 and received the habit on August 30, 1952 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Patricia. (She began using the name, Sister Louise after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 30, 1954 and final vows on August 30, 1957. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA; 1954-, 1963-1973, Principal, 1973-1986, Guidance Counselor, 1996-1997; Principal, 1996-1999; St. Bernadette, 1957-1960; St. Peter, Plattsburgh, NY, 1960-1963; and Coyle & Cassidy HS. Sister served on the leadership team of the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, MA, 1970-1992. She was: a representative of the Dominican Sisters of Hope on the Dominican Academy Alumnae Board; was Secretary for Admissions at Coyle & Cassidy High School in Taunton, MA, 2000-2003; and personal care and religious lifestyle coordinator for the Dominican Sisters infirmary, Newburgh, NY, 2003-2005; and volunteered at San Miguel Academy, Newburgh, NY. Sister Louise earned her BA in English and History from the College of the Sacred Hearts, Fall River, and her MS in Guidance from Bridgewater State Teachers’ College. She died June 4, 2014.
