Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Patricia was born Patricia Sullivan on April 4, 1941 in Stratford, CT. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1959 and received the habit on June 7, 1960 when she was given the religious name, Sister Alice Joseph. (She began using the name, Sister Patricia after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 14, 1961 and final vows on August 4, 1966. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Pope Pius XII HS, Passaic, NJ, 1964-1969; and at Immaculate HS, Danbury, CT, 1969-1975. She was assistant professor of mathematics at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1975-1988; and, after completing her doctoral studies at Columbia University, she returned to Mt. St. Mary College, where she was professor of mathematics, 1991-. Sister Patricia earned: her BA in Mathematics from Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY; her MA in Mathematics from Ohio State University; and her Ed.D in Math Education from Columbia University.
