Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Jean was born Regina Strack on May 9, 1921 in Hartford, CT. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on February 2, 1946 and received the habit on September 25, 1946 when she was given the religious name, Sister Jean Lawrence. She pronounced first vows on September 27, 1947 and final vows on September 27, 1950. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Pope Pius XII HS, Passaic, NJ, 1947-; Mt. St. Mary Academy, Newburgh, NY, 1961-, 1967-1975; Gloucester Catholic HS, Gloucester, NJ, 1965-1966; and Immaculate HS, Danbury, CT, 1966-1967. Sister also ministered in office work, 1977 and as Regional Coordinator for Orange County Substance Control Ministry, 1984-. Sister Jean earned her AB from Good Counsel College, White Plains, NY, and her MS from Catholic University, Washington, DC.
