Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ann was born Ann Stankiewicz on June 24, 1934 in Newburgh, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on December 8, 1952 and received the habit on June 12, 1953 when she was given the religious name, Sister Michael Joseph. (She began using the name, Sister Ann after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 15, 1954 and final vows on August 21, 1957. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools:... St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1956-1959; Holy Family, New Rochelle, NY, 1959-1967; and Pope Pius XII HS, Passaic, NJ, 1967-1968. Sister ministered in the Dominican Sisters' Urban Apostolate, Washington, DC, 1968-1969. She then began teaching Philosophy on the college level at: St. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1969-1975, 1977-1981; and Providence College, Providence, RI, 1981-1984. Sister Ann earned her: BA from Villanova University; and her MA in Philosophy from Fordham University. She died July 1, 2020. See more
