From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Miriam Agnes was born Alice Skelly on May 5, 1904 in Camden , NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation July 16, 1925 and received the habit on May 5, 1926 when she received the religious name, Sister Miriam Agnes. She pronounced first vows on May 6, 1927 and final vows on August 31, 1933. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Paul, Jersey, City, NJ, 1927, 1935-1936, 1944-1950; St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1927-1928; Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, NY, 1928-1929; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1929-1935, 1962-1967; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1936-1938; Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1938-1939; St. Mary, Passaic, NJ, 1939-1941, 1950-1956; St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1941-1944; Guardian Angel, NYC, Principal, 1956-1962; St. Rose, Haddon, Heights, 1967-1969; and Pope Pius High School, Passaic, NJ, 1969-1977. Sister retired at Mt. St. Mary Convent, Newburgh, NY in 1978. Sister Miriam Agnes earned both her BS in Education and her MA in Secondary Administration and Supervision from Fordham University. She died August 14, 1996.
