Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Claire was born Claire Sinotte on August 7, 1940 in Fall River, MA. She entered the Fall River Congregation September 8, 1959 and received the habit on August 21, 1960 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Christopher. (She began using the name, Sister Claire after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 22, 1962 and final vows on August 22, 1965. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1961-1962, 1965-1969, 1970-1971; Saint Bernadette School, New Haven, CT, 1962-1965; and Saint Peter, Plattsburgh, NY, 1969-1970. She taught history at Bishop Gerrard High School, Fall River, MA, 1971-1973 and social studies, Saint Francis Xavier, Acushnet, MA, 1973-1979. Sister ministered with the Cheyenne and Arapaho as part of the Las Casas Dominican Project in Oklahoma and with the Navajo in Arizona for eight years, 1979-1987. She returned to the east coast, where she taught at Jesus Savior Junior High in Newport, RI, 1987-1988, was administrative assistant for the Association for Adolescent and Family Therapy, Warwick, RI, 1988-1991. She was a member of the Leadership Team and Secretary General for the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, MA, 1992-1995. Sister Claire was director of religious education at Christ the King Parish in Mashpee MA, 1996-. Sister Claire earned her BA in Education from the College of the Sacred Hearts, Fall River, and her MA in American Studies from Boston College.
