This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Evelyn was born Helen Shehdan on May 28, 1918 in Nazareth, NC. She entered the Newburgh Congregation October 4, 1936 and received the habit on June 27, 1937 when she received the religious name, Sister Evelyn. She pronounced first vows on June 28, 1938 and final vows on August 21, 1944. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Francis, Newburgh, NY, 1940-1941; St. Boniface, NYC, 1941-1946; St. Elizabeth, Elizabeth City, NC, 1946-1948, 1950-1961; St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1948-1950;Sacred heart, Newburgh, NY, Principal, 1966-1969; Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, 1961-1967; and Our Lady of Fatima, Scarsdale, NY, 1977-1986. Sister moved to Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY where she served as sacristan. Sister Evelyn earned her BS in Education from Villanova University, PA, and her MA in Guidance from Seton Hall University. She died February 25, 2011.
