This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Margaret de Lourdes was born Julia Shebey on December 19, 1907 in Passaic, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation March 21, 1926 and received the habit on November 12, 1926 when she received the religious name, Sister Margaret de Lourdes. She pronounced first vows on November 26, 1927 and final vows on August 12, 1934. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Sts. Peter and Paul, Trenton, NJ, 1928-1931, 1935-1950; St. Thomas, Cornwall, NJ, Jan.-June, 1931; St. Joseph, Bayonne, NJ, 1931-1933; Guardian Angels, NYC, 1933-1934; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1934-1935; Convento San Jose, San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, 1950-1965, 1968-1973, and limited services, 1973-1979; St. Elizabeth, Elizabeth City, NC, principal,1965-1967; and Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, principal, 1967-1968. Sister moved to Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY in 1979 and served in Administrative services, 1981-1982. She provided assistance in Pastoral Ministry in Holiday Florida, 1983 and then tutored in St. Timothy School, Miami, FL, 1983-1984. Sister was a Parish Minister volunteer in Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Scarsdale, NY in 1984. Sister Margaret de Lourdes earned her BS in education from Seton Hall University. She died April 20, 2000.
