This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Margaret was born Margaret Scott on May 2, 1924 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1945 and received the habit on June 24, 1946 when she received the religious name, Sister Ann Arthur. (She began using the name, Sister Margaret after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 25, 1947 and final vows on August 26, 1950. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Christ the King, Yonkers, NY, 1955-1959; and Gloucester Catholic H.S, 1959-1964, 1966-1969; Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, 1964-1966. Sister ministered in the Camden, NJ Diocesan Office of Education, 1969-1973 and was elected third Councilor of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY, 1971-1975. She was re-elected 1975-1979. Sister Margaret was Associate Principal, Mt. St. Mary H.S., 1975-1977, and Principal of St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, 1977-1979. She also served as Food Services Manager, Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY, 1981-1984, and Maintenance Supervisor, Mt. St. Mary, 1983-1984. Sister took a sabbatical year at Mt. St. Joseph, Ohio, 1984-1985. After returning she was Pastoral Associate at Sacred Heart Parish, Newburgh, NY, 1985. Sister Margaret earned her BA in Education from Fordham University, and her MA in Education from Villanova University. She died January 13, 2005.
