Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary was born Mary Schneiders on July 21, 1942 in Chicago, IL. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1960 and received the habit on June 7, 1961 when she received the religious name, Sister Thomas Elizabeth. (She began using the name, Sister Mary after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 20, 1962 and final vows on March 24, 1968. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1964; Academia San Jose Elementary, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, 1965-1967; St. Christopher, Parsippany, NJ, 1970-1975; and Immaculate High School in Danbury, CT, 1975-1976. Following full-time study, Sister Mary was an assistant professor at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1981-1993. She was involved in spiritual and renewal ministry at BERAKAH in Pittsfield, NH, 1993-2017. Sister Mary earned: her BA in Education from Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY; her MA in Religious Studies from Providence College; and her PhD in Systematic Theology form The Catholic University of America.
