Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Anthony was born Emma Schmittauer on July 28, 1935 in Passaic, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1955 and received the habit on June 12, 1956 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary Anthony. She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1957 and final vows on August 21, 1960. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1958-1959; St. Boniface, Paterson, NJ, 1959-1960; Saint Cecilia, Iselin, NJ, 1960-1969; and Saint Joseph Elementary School in Toms River, NJ, 1969-1995. Sister was Coordinator of Religion at Saint Joseph’s, 1992-1995, and also served as church manager for Saint Joseph’s Parish, 1996-. Sister Mary Anthony earned her BA in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY.
