Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Frances was born Frances Schier on December 20, 1927 in Jersey City, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 7, 1944 and received the habit on June 21, 1945 when she received the religious name, Sister Leo Marie. (She began using the name, Sister Frances after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 24, 1946 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1946-1953; Sts. John and Paul, Larchmont, NY, 1954-1959, 1981-1983; St. Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1959; St. Joan of Arc, Fairview, NJ, 1963; Pope Pius XII High School, Passaic, NJ, 1967-1969; and St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, as Principal,1969-1978. Sister also served as Assistant Superintendent for Catholic Elementary Schools in the Newark, NJ Archdiocese, 1978, and as Pastoral Associate, Our Lady Mother of the Church, Woodcliff Lake, NJ, 1984-. Sister Frances earned her BA from Seton Hall University, and her MA in History from Catholic University, Washington, DC. She died November 25, 2015.
