Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Maura was born Genevieve Schefter on September 20, 1933 in Irvington, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1953 and received the habit on June 14, 1954 when she received the religious name, Sister Maura. She pronounced first vows on June 15, 1955 and final vows on August 21, 1958. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Immaculata School, Durham, NC, 1955-1961; Academia San Jose Elementary, Guaynabo, PR. 1965-1967; Nativity, Bronx, NY, 1961-1965; Guardian Angel, NYC, 1967-1971; principal at Saints John and Paul, Larchmont, NY, 1971-1981; and also at Saint Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1981-1991. Sister Maura also served as coordinator of Nazareth Community at the Dominican Sisters Center of Hope in Newburgh, NY, 1992-1994, and as administrator of the Dominican Sisters Center of Hope in Newburgh, New York, 1994-. Sister Maura earned her BS in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh and her MA in Education from Villanova University in PA. She died January 15, 2020.
