Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ann was born Ann Sakac on July 24, 1932 in Passaic, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1951 and received the habit on June 16, 1952 when she received the religious name, Sister John Mary. (She began using the name, Sister Ann after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1953 and final vows on August 11, 1956. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1953-1958. She taught English at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie NY, 1958-1966. After pursuing full-time studies, she was: assistant dean of students at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1969-1971; acting registrar, 1971-1972; and taught English, 1972-1976. Sister was acting president, 1976-1977 and took over the role of president in 1977, a position she held until her retirement in 2007. Sister Ann earned: her BA in English from Villanova; her MA in English from Catholic University; and her PhD in Higher Education & English from Catholic University.
