Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Annette was born Annette Roach on October 30, 1929 in Mooers Forks, NY. She entered the Fall River Congregation February 1, 1948 and received the habit on August 25, 1948 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary Daniel. (She began using the name, Sister Annette after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 30, 1949 and final vows on August 30, 1952. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1948-1950, 1951-1956, 1968-1970; St. Peter, Plattsburgh, NY, 1950-1951; and St. Peter’s High School, Plattsburgh, NY, 1956-1961; MA. She was assistant principal and teacher at St. Bernadette School in New Haven, CT, 1961-1966 and then principal of St. Francis Xavier Elementary School in Acushnet, MA, 1967-1968, 1973-1979. Sister was assistant director of Model Cities for the New Bedford Public Schools, New Bedford MA, 1970-1973. She then moved to Seiling, OK, where she did social work with the Dominican Sisters United for Ministry, 1979-1981. This was followed by reading specialist at St. Michael’s Indian School in St. Michael, AZ, 1981-1987. Returning to the northeast, Sister Annette was principal at Jesus Saviour School in Newport, RI, 1987-1988. She then began parish ministry at St. Gregory the Great Parish in Warwick, RI, 1988-1992. Sister Annette was elected Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Fall River MA, 1992-1995. After leaving office she became the director of Christian Formation at the Parish of Christ the King in Mashpee, MA. Sister Annette earned her BA in English and History from Regis College in Massachusetts, and her MA in English and Masters in Education from Boston College.
