Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Ann was born Ann Reyes on February 27, 1931 in Woonsocket, RI. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1950 and received the habit on June 15, 1951 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary Richard. (She began using the name, Sister, Ann after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1952 and final vows on August 23, 1955. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Villa Caparra, Puerto Rico, 1952-1954; St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1955; Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1960-1961; St. Mary High School, Gloucester, NJ, 1961-1969, 1972-1973; Pope Pius H.S., Passaic, NJ, 1969-1971; and Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, Principal, 1971-1972. Sister also served in the Spanish Speaking Apostolate, Atlantic City, NJ, 1973-1976. Sister Ann served as Religious Education Coordinator in: Spanish Apostolate, Annunciation, New York City, 1976-1977; St. Emeric Parish, New York City, 1977-1978; Sacred Heart, Highland Falls, NY 1978-1979; St. Bernard, White Plains, NY, 1981-1984; and as Pastoral Minister and Adult Education, Immaculate Conception, Bronx, NY, 1984. Sister earned a BS in Education from Fordham University and an MA in Spanish, Middlebury College, VT. She died April 17, 2012.
