Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Dawn was born Dawn Agnes Ryan on October 10, 1934 in Jersey City, NJ and baptized Agnes Redmond. She entered the Newburgh Congregation December 8, 1955 and received the habit on June 12, 1956 when she received the religious name, Sister John Damien. (She began using the name, Sister Dawn after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1957 and final vows on August 20, 1960. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Patrick's, Woodbury, NJ, 1957-1965; St. Mary's, Paterson, NJ, 1965-1968, 1969-1970; Sts. John and Paul, Larchmont, NY, 1968-1969; Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, 1972-1976,1977-1980; St. Lawrence, Lindenwald, NJ, 1970-1972; Our Lady of Good Counsel, Pompton Plains, NJ, 1976-1977, St. Anthony, Hawthorne, NJ, 1980-1981; Pope Pius XII Diocesan HS, Passaic, NJ, 1981-1983; Straight and Narrow, Paterson, NJ, 1983-1987; St. Therese, Paterson, NJ, 2000-2001; and St. George, Paterson, NJ, 2001-2002. Sister was also principal in Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, 1987-2000. Sr. Dawn was involved with OASIS, Paterson, NJ where she coordinated the school division and taught ESL, 2002-2008. She also did volunteer teaching at San Miguel Academy, Newburgh, NY. Sister Dawn earned her BA in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College and her MS in Education and Reading from the College of New Rochelle. She died September 15, 2016.
