From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Joseph was born Anna Priestner on September 26, 1912 in Paterson, NJ. She entered the Newburgh Congregation October 7, 1934 and received the habit on June 26, 1935 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary Joseph. She pronounced first vows on June 26, 1936 and final vows on August 20, 1942. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1938-1939; Our Lady of Victory, Mt. Vernon, NY, business classes, 1939-1943; Cathedral Latin High School, (also known as Cardinal Gibbons High School), Raleigh, NC, 1943-1962; and St. Joseph High School, Toms River, NJ, 1962-1965. She then moved to Academia San Jose, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico to serve as: principal, 1965-1987; vice-principal, 1987-1995; and finance director, 1995-2001 Sister Mary Joseph earned her BA in Secondary Education from Fordham University and her MS in Library Science from Villanova. Sister retired to the Newburgh Center of Hope, Newburgh, NY. She died December 3, 2010.
