Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Louise was born Louise Place on May 14, 1929 in Fall River, MA. She entered the Fall River Congregation February 2, 1947 and received the habit on August 29, 1947 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary Lawrence. (She began using the name, Sister Julie after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 30, 1948 and final vows on August 30, 1952. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Rose, Acushnet, MA, 1948-1949, 1964-1971, 1981-1988; Dominican Academy, Fall River, NY, 1949-1954; St. Anne's, Mooers Forks, NY, 1954-1955; At. Augustine, Peru, NY, 1955-1956; St. Patrick, Fall River, MA, 1956-1959; Dartmouth, MA, 1971-1972; and Plattsburgh, NY, 1963. Sister moved to the Meadowview Assisted Care at The Wartburg, Mount Vernon, NY. Sister Louise earned her BS in Education from the college of the Sacred Hearts,MA in 1968. She died April 23, 2020.
