Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Julie was born Julie Pintal on March 11, 1917 in Champlain, Quebec, Canada. She entered the Fall River Congregation September 8, 1937 and received the habit on September 19, 1938 when she received the religious name, Sister Julie Marie. (She began using the name, Sister Julie after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 20, 1939 and final vows on August 20, 1942. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St Anne, Fall River, MA, 1942-1943; Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1943-1945, 1962-1963,1975-1976; and in the Dominican Academy High School, Fall River, MA, 1945-1956, 1963-1971 . After serving as novice mistress for the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, 1957-1961, Sister Julie taught at St. Peter School in Plattsburgh NY, 1961-1962, 1974-1975. She also taught at Bishop Gerrard High School in Fall River, MA, 1971-1974. Sister was religious education coordinator for St. Anne Parish in Fall River MA, 1976-1979 and continued at St. Anne Parish working in the office, 1976-1987, 1992-2002. She also served on the council of the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, MA, 1982-1992. Sister Julie moved to the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Newburgh Center in 2002. While living there, Sister completed training in the Literacy Volunteers of America, and was involved in the program as a tutor for over three years. Sister moved to Meadowview at the Wartburg, Mount Vernon, NY on March 10, 2014, and then to Saint Catherine of Siena Convent in Caldwell, NJ on December 3, 2014. Sister Julie earned her BA in French/Education from Providence College and her MA in French from Rhode Island College in Providence, RI. She died June 13, 2017.
