Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Patricia was born Patricia Peters on October 9, 1932. She entered the Newburgh Congregation August 30, 1961 and received the habit on June 19, 1962 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary Emmanuel. (She began using the name, Sister Patricia after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 20, 1963 and final vows on November 24, 1968. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Bishop Dunn Memorial School in Newburgh NY, 1961-65; principal at Saint Mary School in Newburgh NY, 1965-66; principal at Immaculate High School in Danbury CT. She taught history, 1966-68 and did guidance/counseling, 1968-74 . Sister was the Director of Higher Education Opportunities at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY, 1974-87 and again, 1987-89. She served in congregational administration, 1983-91. Sister was director of religious education at Bishop Hodges Pastoral Center in Hustonville WV, 1992-2003 and was a money management counselor with Tyrand Cooperative Ministries in Mill Creek WV, 2003-2004. She served as a bereavement counselor with Hospice Care Corporation in Arthurdale WV, 2004-? Sister Patricia earned her BA in History/English from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station NJ. She participated in the West Virginia Institute of Spirituality, attended summer programs in guidance at: Boston University; Notre Dame University;, and Georgetown University. She received a 6th year certificate in counseling from Fairfield University and a preaching certificate from the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis.
