Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Brigid was born Agnes Gertrude Penney on July 2, 1919. She entered the Ossining Congregation on February 19, 1943 and received the habit on September 8, 1943 when she was given the religious name, Sister Agnes Gertrude. (She began using the name, Sister Brigid after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on September 9, 1944 and final vows on September 9, 1947. During her years in the congregation she served in the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor Home Health Agencies in: Springfield, OH; NYC, Dayton, OH; Boston, MA; and Hampton Bays, NY. She also worked in: Grasslands Hospital Valhalla, NY and Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY; Catholic Charities in the Rockville Centre Diocese, NY. Other services that Sister Brigid participated in were: Social work assistant; case manager; residence manager for Catholic Charities Siena Residence in Bay Shore, NY; board member of Children and Parents Together; co-founder and board member of Suburban Housing, Research and Development. She also volunteered at the Interfaith Emergency Food Pantry in Bay Shore, NY. Sister Brigid received her RN from St. Catherine's Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, a BS from Boston College and did Post Graduate work in Pediatrics. She died on February 3, 2011.
