From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Janine was born Janine Parent on June 27, 1935. She entered the Fall River Congregation August 31, 1953 and received the habit on August 28, 1954 when she was given the religious name, Sister Marcelle Marie. (She began using the name, Sister Janine after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on august 22, 1956 and final vows on August 22, 1959. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Dominican Academy in Fall River, MA, 1955-56 and 1973-80; Saint Anne School in Fall River, MA, 1956-57 and 1988-96; Saint Peter’s School in Plattsburgh, NY, 1958-60; and Saint Francis Xavier School in Acushnet, MA, 1968-71. She was principal at Saint Francis Xavier School, 1971-73. She taught religious education classes at Saint Anne’s Parish in Mooers Forks, NY,1957; Saint Augustine’s School in Peru, NY, 1960-64; and was principal at Saint Augustine’s, 1964-68. Sister also taught at Saint Bernadette School in New Haven, CT 1957-58 and 1980-88. In 1997. She moved to Newburgh, NY where she was receptionist and office assistant at Bishop Dunn Memorial School until 2009. Sister Janine also ministered to our sisters and other residents at the Wartburg, Mt. Vernon, NY. Sister Janine earned her BA in Elementary Education and History from Providence College.
