This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Arlene was born Arlene Oswald on November 8, 1938. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1956 and received the habit on June 12, 1957 when she received the religious name, Sister Mary Mark. (She began using the name, Sister Arlene after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1958 and final vows on August 21, 1961. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Paul's in Jersey City, NJ, 1957-66 and at Saint Mary School in Gloucester NJ, 1966-70. She was director of religious education at the Religious Education Center in Newburgh NY, 1970-75; Saint Mary Parish in Fishkill NY, 1975-81; Saint Joseph School in Carteret NJ, 1981-83; and the northern region of the Diocese of Syracuse NY, 1983-89. Sister Arlene was administrator of Mount Saint Mary Convent in Newburgh NY, 1989-94. Sister has also been a pastoral associate and director of religious education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Nutley NJ. After retiring from the ministry of religious education, Sister Arlene moved to Asbury Park, NJ. Sister Arlene earned a BA in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College and a Master’s degree in Religious Education from LaSalle University. She was also certified in Red Cross Home Health Care. She died January 4, 2020.
