This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Barbara Jean was born Barbara Jean Ortmann on October 28, 1938. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 8, 1959 and received the habit on June 7, 1960. She pronounced first vows on August 12, 1961 and final vows on June 22, 1968. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Patrick School in Woodbury, NJ., from 1961-62; Saint Joseph School in Bayonne, NJ, 1962-63; Our Lady of Lourdes in Paterson, NJ, 1963-66 and 1967-71; and Saint Peter in Rosendale, NY, 1966-67. She also taught at Sacred Heart in Camden, NJ, 1972-74; Saint Paul in Jersey City, NJ, 1979-82; and Saint Joseph in Carteret, NJ, 1982-83. Other ministries included service in the infirmary program at Mount Saint Mary Convent in Newburgh, NY, 1971-72; and play therapist at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden, NJ, 1974-79. Since 1983, Sister Barbara has been a chaplain at Saint Peter’s Medical Center in New Brunswick, NJ. During this time, she was also a bereavement councilor and hospice chaplain for 15 years as well as an alcohol/drug councilor. Sister Barbara earned her BA in Social Studies from Mount Saint Mary College.
