Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Rosanne was born Myrtle O'Rourke on July 23, 1916. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 6, 1937 and received the habit on June 17, 1938 when she was given the religious name, Sister Rosanne. She pronounced first vows on June 18, 1939 and final vows on August 21, 1945. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Paul School in Jersey City NJ,1939-43 and at St. Mary School in Gloucester NJ, 1943-59. She was principal at Annunciation School in Tuckahoe NY, 1959-65. She then returned to elementary education and taught at: Holy Family, New Rochelle NY, 1965-72; Saints John & Paul, Larchmont NY, 1972-73; and St. Lawrence, Lindenwold NJ, 1973-90. She continued at St. Lawrence School as librarian until 1997. She also taught religious education classes until 1993. Sister Rosanne moved to the Dominican Sisters of Hope Center in Newburgh when she retired in 1997. While there, she volunteered in the Dominican Sisters’ infirmary. In 2009 Sister moved to Meadowview at Wartburg in Mt. Vernon, New York. In 2016 she moved to St. Catherine of Siena Convent in Caldwell, New Jersey. Sister Rosanne received a B.S. in Education from Villanova University, PA and an M.A. in Education, from Villanova University, PA and certifications in math, theology and religious education. She died on November 13, 2016.
