Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Anna Veronica was born Anna Veronica Oncia on March 16, 1931. She entered the Newburgh Congregation December 8, 1950 and received the habit on June 15, 1951 when she was given the religious name, Sister Martin Imelda. (She began using the name Sister Anna Veronica after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 17, 1952 and final vows on August 22, 1955. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Cathedral Elementary School in Raleigh, NC, 1952-1962 and 1971-197; Annunciation School in Tuckahoe, NY, 1962-197; and Guardian Angel School in New York City, 1973-2004. Sister moved to Newburgh NY where she volunteered in the development office, 2004-2007. Sister Anna earned her BS in Elementary Education from Villanova and her MS in Reading from the College of New Rochelle. She died on December 29, 2014.
