This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH. It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical
Sister Julia was born Julia O'Leary on December 31, 1921. She entered the Newburgh Congregation September 6, 1942 and received the habit on June 17, 1943 when she was given the religious name, Sister Miriam Thomas. (She began using the name Sister Julia after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 18, 1944 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary,... Poughkeepsie, NY; Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ; St. Thomas, Cornwall, NY; Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY and Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester City, NJ. Sister also did substitute teaching at St. Augustine School, Ossining, NY and then retired to do volunteer work in English as a Second Language in Ossining, NY. Sister Julia received a BS in Education from Villanova University, PA, an MA in History from Niagara University and an MS in Sociology from Illinois Institute of Technology. She died on October 14, 2008.
