Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Maureen was born Helen Nash on April 2, 1908. She entered the Ossining Congregation on March 19, 1935 and received the habit on December 3, 1935, when she was given the religious name, Sister Maureen. She pronounced first vows on March 8, 1937 and final vows on March 9, 1941. During her years in the congregation she served in the following places as a Registered Nurse in the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor Home Health Agencies: Bronx, NY; Denver, CO; Minneapolis, MN; and in New York, NY. Sister also served in St. Vincent's Hospital, NY; Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY; and as supervisor of the infirmary in Mariandale, Ossining, NY. After retiring she continued to volunteer in Home Nursing in Tarrytown, NY. Sister Maureen received her RN from Columbus Hospital, NYC. She died on November 9, 2009 and is buried in the cemetery at Mariandale, Ossining, NY.
