Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Nancy was born Nancy Moroney on June 9, 1925 in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on December 8, 1944 and received the habit on June 21, 1945 when she was given the religious name, Sister Thomas Marie. She pronounced first vows on June 24, 1946 and final vows on August 25, 1949. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Mary, Gloucester, NJ, 1946-1949; Sts. Peter and Paul, Trenton, NJ, 1949-1964; Holy Trinity, Passaic, NJ, 1964-1966; Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester, NJ, as Guidance Counselor, 1966-1977. Sister also served the congregation in the Finance Office for the Dominican Sisters in Newburgh, 1977-1978. Sister Nancy then spent one year in an administrative position at Mount Saint Mary High School in Newburgh. Other roles Sister Nancy has served in include: Registrar Office clerk at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY, 1979-1980, 1992-1994; administrative assistant at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1980-1992; and finance clerk for the Dominican Sisters in Newburgh, 1994-1995). Sister Nancy served as bookstore clerk at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1996-. Sister was also an avid knitter and made towels and baby clothes to be sold in the gift shop at the Mariandale Center, Ossining, NY. Sister Nancy earned her BS in Elementary Education and MA in Guidance from Villanova University.
