Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Virginia was born Virginia Mohr on July 8, 1928 in Newark, OH. She entered the Ossining Congregation March 7, 1954 and received the habit on September 9, 1954 when she received the religious name, Sister Virginia Marie. (She began using the name, Sister Virginia after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on September 10, 1955 and final vows on September 10, 1958. During her years in the congregation she served in the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor Family Health Agencies : Boston, MA, 1955-1956; Springfield, OH, 1956-1962; Minneapolis, MN, 1962-1965; Dayton, OH, 1965-1967; Columbus, OH, 1967-1969; Denver, CO, 1969-1971; Ossining, NY, 1971-1975; Bronx, NY,1975-1977, 1979-1981; and Harlem, NY, 1977-1979. Sister worked in the Philippines with Family to Family, 1981-1983. Upon completing a sabbatical in 1984, she returned to Columbus, OH, where she ministered with the Dominican Home Health Agency, 1984-1993. Sister Virginia was a community nurse for Dominican Community Services, Cincinnati, OH, 1993-1997, and was a nurse aide supervisor with Day Share in Cincinnati, OH, 1997-2007. She retired at the Newburgh Center of Hope in July 2007. Sister Virginia earned: her RN in Nursing from Mt. Carmel Hospital; a BS in Public Health Nursing from the University of Dayton; and a PHN in Public Health Nursing from Columbia University. She died July 9, 2014.
