Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary was born Mary Mitchell on April 9, 1935 in Queens, NY. She entered the Ossining Congregation September 7, 1953 and received the habit on March 9, 1954 when she received the religious name, Sister John Marie. (She began using the name, Sister Mary after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on March 10, 1955 and final vows on March 9, 1958. During her years in the congregation she served in the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor Family Health Agencies : Ossining, NY, Home Health Aid,1955-1957, Nursing supervisor, Social Worker, 1967-1969; Hampton Bays, NY, PH Nursing, 1960-1967; and Bronx, Social Work Practice, 1969-1976. Sister Mary also served the Ossining Congregation as: Formation Director, 1968-1974; Congregational Leadership, 1972-1976; and as President, 1976-1984; Sister ministered in Spiritual Direction and Counseling in: Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, Wernersville, PA, 1985-1992; St. Bonaventure Parish, Philadelphia, PA, 1985-1988; and Mariandale Center, Ossining, NY, 1993-1995. She was also a member of the GIV, (Growing into the Vision) Team, 1992-1993. This was a retreat process for the Fall River, Newburgh, and Ossining Congregations. She died August 25, 1995.
