Biographical / Historical
Sister Jean was born Jean Meyer on December 5, 1930 in Baltimore, MD. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1955 and received the habit on June 12, 1956 when she was given the religious name, Sister Martin Joseph. (She began using the name, Sister Jean after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 13, 1957 and final vows on August 21, 1961. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Patrick, Newburgh, NY, 1955-1957; Little Flower, Pensacola, FL, 1957-1958; Saint Brendan, New Haven, CT, 1958-1960; Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson, NJ, 1960-1969, 1972-1978; Saint Boniface, Paterson, NJ, 1970-1972; and St. Luke, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, 1978-1979. In 1979, Sister Jean was appointed secretary at Holy Trinity School, Passaic, NJ and served in that capacity for one year before being appointed principal of the school. She remained in that role until 1996, when she accepted the position of archivist for the Dominican Sisters of Hope. Sister Jean earned her BA in Social Studies from Mount Saint Mary College. She died September 27, 2016.
