Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Elizabeth was born Elizabeth (Liz) Menard on October 28, 1940 in Moners, NY. She entered the Fall River Congregation on August 30, 1958 and received the habit on August 22, 1959 when she received the religious name, Sister Bernard Marie. (She began using the name, Sister Elizabeth after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on August 22, 1961 and final vows on August 22, 1964. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Dominican Academy, Fall River, MA, 1960-1961; St. Bernadette, New Haven, CT, 1961-1970; and St. Peter, Plattsburgh, NY, 1970-1974. She was formation/vocation director for the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, MA, 1974-1980 and was co-director of the Salem Deanery Christian Life Center, 1982-1986. Sister also served on the General Council of the Dominican Sisters of Fall River, MA, first as Councilor, 1978-1986, and then as Prioress, 1986-1992. Following a sabbatical, Sister served in Christian formation at St. Alphonsus/Holy Name Parish, Tupper Lake, NY, 1993-1999. She has been Regional Director of Christian Formation in the Diocesan Regional Christian Formation Office located in Plattsburgh NY, 1999-. Sister Elizabeth earned her BA in English and History, and her MS in Reading and Education from Southern Connecticut State College. She earned her MA in Religious Studies from Providence College.
