From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Carolyn was born Valerie Meehan on March 5, 1925 in Roseton, NY. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on May 30, 1946 and received the habit on December 22, 1946 when she was given the religious name, Sister Mary Carolyn. She pronounced first vows on December 23, 1947 and final vows on August 27, 1951. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: Saint Rose, Haddon Heights, NJ, 1947-1958; Academia San Jose, San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, 1958-1960; Academia San Jose, Guaynabo, PR, 1960-1961; Immaculata, Durham ,NC, 1961-1962; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1962-1967; Nativity, Bronx, NY, 1967-1968; Saint Mary, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1968-1971; Saint Joseph, Toms River, NJ, 1971-1981; and St. Timothy, Miami, FL, 1981-1986. Sister was Director of Religious Education, St. Timothy Parish, 1986-.

She held that position until her retirement in 2008. St. Timothy, in recognition of Sister’s many years of devoted service, named a building in her honor: The Sister Carolyn Learning Center.

Sister Mary Carolyn Meehan, OP of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died on March 16, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh. She was 97 years of age.
