Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This collection contains records from all the sisters who make up the DSOH.  It includes their personal papers, publications, artistic work, photographs, diplomas, ministry history etc. The Dominican Sisters of Hope were founded in 1995. The group includes members of the former Newburgh Domincan, Fall River Dominican and Ossining Dominican Communities. The sisters work and minister in various ways including community organizing, social work, education, environmental advocacy, and retreat ministry.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Frances was born Frances Jane McNamee on February 1, 1913 in Philadelphia, PA. She entered the Newburgh Congregation on September 8, 1934 and received the habit on June 25, 1935 when she was given the religious name, Sister Andrea. (She began using the name, Sister Frances after Vatican II). She pronounced first vows on June 26, 1936 and final vows on August 20, 1942. During her years in the congregation she served in the following schools: St. Mary, Paterson, NJ, 1936-1947; Sacred Heart, Camden, NJ, 1947-1949; St. Paul, Jersey City, NJ, 1949-1952; St. Patrick, Woodbury, NJ, 1952-1959; and Pope Pius Xii HS, Passaic, NJ, 1959-1967. She served as Director of Financial Aid at Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh, NY. Sister then worked as Assistant Director of Financial Aid and Placement, Culinary Institute of America, 1973-1974, Director of Financial Aid, 1977. Sister also was Head Counselor in Residence, Culinary Institute of America, 1974-1975. Sister Frances also served as Secretary to Greenwich Catholic Elementary School System, Greenwich, CT, 1978-1979, and in Apostolate secretarial, Salesian Mission Office, New Rochelle, NY1980-1989. Sister retired in 1989 and moved to Mt. St. Mary, Newburgh, NY. Sister Frances earned her BS and MA in Elementary Education from Columbia University, and held permanent certification in shorthand and typing. She died September 12, 2006.
